Valerii Zaluzhnyi: The Unbreakable Commander Defending Ukraine’s Freedom

Valerii Fedorovych Zaluzhnyi, or Валерій Федорович Залужний in Ukrainian, stands today as a symbol of Ukrainian resilience and a brilliant military mind whose strategies and tenacity have shaped the country’s defence against Russia’s full-scale invasion. As Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Zaluzhnyi has shown remarkable courage and innovation, transforming Ukraine’s military response and earning the admiration of both his compatriots and the international community. His leadership has allowed Ukraine not only to resist but to fight back against an aggressor of vastly larger size and resources, and his efforts have inspired a nation to rally for sovereignty and freedom.

Before the war, few outside Ukraine knew of Valerii Zaluzhnyi, but within his homeland, he had a strong reputation as a modern, forward-thinking leader who brought fresh ideas to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Born on July 8, 1973, in the small town of Novohrad-Volynskyi, Zaluzhnyi grew up in a Ukraine that was redefining itself in the shadow of the Soviet collapse. His commitment to an independent, sovereign Ukraine shaped his career in the military, beginning with his graduation from the Odessa Military Academy in 1997, and then his studies at the National Defence University of Ukraine.

Over the years, Zaluzhnyi climbed through the ranks, demonstrating both military skill and a vision for a strong and autonomous Ukraine. In 2021, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, just seven months before Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Zaluzhnyi’s appointment, often seen as a crucial decision by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, would soon prove invaluable in Ukraine’s fight for survival.

When Russia launched its invasion, the world expected Ukraine to fall swiftly under the weight of Russia’s military machine. Yet Zaluzhnyi, drawing on his deep understanding of military strategy and the lessons of the past, refused to yield. He knew that in order to survive, Ukraine’s armed forces needed to combine unbreakable resilience with smart, agile tactics. Zaluzhnyi was not only leading a war of weapons but also a war of minds and morale.

During the initial days of the invasion, when Russian forces sought to capture Kyiv in a rapid, overwhelming assault, Zaluzhnyi’s brilliance shone through. His strategy was not to confront Russia head-on but to engage with flexible, asymmetrical tactics. Zaluzhnyi authorised Ukrainian forces to disrupt Russian supply lines, launch ambushes, and use smaller units to strike swiftly and retreat. His orders allowed Ukrainian troops to take advantage of their knowledge of the terrain and the high morale they possessed. Under his command, the Ukrainian military defied expectations, holding back Russian forces from Kyiv in a move that became a defining moment of the war.

A hallmark of Zaluzhnyi’s leadership is his openness to innovation and his modern approach to warfare. As a commander, he understood that the conflict with Russia would require not just bravery but also a mastery of 21st-century technology and information warfare. Drones, satellite intelligence, cyber defence, and information dissemination became essential parts of Ukraine’s strategy. Zaluzhnyi integrated these technologies into the Ukrainian military operations, giving his soldiers the advantage of real-time battlefield information and the ability to respond swiftly to changing conditions.

Perhaps one of Zaluzhnyi’s most revolutionary ideas was his approach to mission command. He empowered lower-level commanders to make decisions on the ground, knowing that flexibility was crucial to countering a larger, slower-moving force. This decentralised command style allowed Ukraine to respond to Russian advances dynamically, with soldiers operating as cohesive yet independently-thinking units. Zaluzhnyi’s approach broke from traditional military rigidity, allowing the Ukrainian forces to adapt fluidly to the chaos of war.

The impact of this strategy became evident during the counter-offensives in the Kharkiv and Kherson regions. Ukrainian forces, operating with the flexibility granted by Zaluzhnyi, struck Russian positions with precision and reclaimed key areas. These offensives not only shifted momentum in Ukraine’s favour but demonstrated to the world the effectiveness of Zaluzhnyi’s leadership. He had managed to transform an army that, though smaller, was nimble, resilient, and undaunted.

Valerii Zaluzhnyi is more than just a military leader; he is a hero to millions of Ukrainians. His unyielding stance, his courage under pressure, and his relentless pursuit of Ukrainian sovereignty have made him a symbol of the Ukrainian spirit. While Russia aimed to demoralise Ukraine and fracture its unity, Zaluzhnyi’s leadership has done the opposite. He has unified the country and inspired not only his soldiers but also civilians, who see in him the embodiment of Ukrainian resilience.

In his public appearances, Zaluzhnyi remains calm, focused, and resolute. His presence projects both strength and humility, and his determination to defend Ukraine has made him a figure of hope for a nation fighting to protect its future. Ukrainians look up to Zaluzhnyi not just for his military acumen but for his integrity, his loyalty to his country, and his genuine concern for the people he protects. He represents a new chapter for Ukraine a chapter in which Ukraine is not a victim, but a nation fighting with bravery, unity, and pride.

The path ahead for Zaluzhnyi and Ukraine remains challenging. Russia continues its attempts to subdue Ukraine, and the war has taken a toll on both military and civilian life. However, Zaluzhnyi’s leadership has made Ukraine a formidable opponent, and his strategies have continued to confound Russia. His capacity to maintain international alliances, receive Western military support, and inspire a nation are all essential as Ukraine pushes forward.
