Aberdeen City Libraries to Launch Tech-Focused Innovation Station with New Funding
Aberdeen City Libraries is set to revolutionise how its community accesses emerging technology, thanks to a new grant from the 2024/25 Public Library Improvement Fund (PLIF). Aberdeen is one of thirteen recipients in Scotland to benefit from this funding, which is administered by the Scottish Library & Information Council (SLIC) on behalf of the Scottish Government.
The funding will enable the development of the Innovation Station, a technology hub within Aberdeen’s Central Library, aiming to make coding, robotics, and other STEM skills more accessible to people of all ages.
The Innovation Station is a forward-thinking initiative designed to help Aberdeen residents build skills in technology, coding, numeracy, and related fields. By focusing on STEM activities (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the project hopes to enhance employability and open doors to careers in Scotland’s growing STEM industries.
Councillor Martin Greig, Convener for Education and Children’s Services, praised the project as a much-needed addition to the city’s educational offerings:
“This new teaching facility is an excellent initiative that will give many people in the city the chance to develop their skills... These areas of learning need to be more accessible to all ages.”
By lowering barriers to STEM education, the project aligns with the city’s Local Outcome Improvement Plan, which highlights the importance of preparing residents for employment in industries of the future.
One of the most exciting aspects of the Innovation Station is its youth-led approach. Young people will play a central role in planning, developing, and delivering the project, working closely with library teams.
Councillor Greig emphasised the value of involving young people in such a meaningful way:
“The hands-on involvement of young people in creating and delivering Innovation Station is a huge benefit. Their contribution adds so much value and strength to the project.”
By engaging young people as advocates for the project, Aberdeen City Libraries hopes to spark city-wide interest in STEM activities and inspire the next generation of innovators.
The Innovation Station is a prime example of how libraries can evolve beyond traditional roles to become dynamic community hubs. Modern libraries increasingly serve as spaces where people can access not just books, but also vital resources like technology, training, and networking opportunities.
Aberdeen City Libraries has long demonstrated a commitment to community engagement. With the Innovation Station, the library is taking another step forward, ensuring that residents have the tools and opportunities needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
The PLIF is an annual grant programme that supports innovative projects aimed at creating lasting benefits for communities. For 2024/25, a total of £200,000 has been awarded to libraries across Scotland.
The Scottish Government’s investment in libraries highlights their importance as accessible, inclusive spaces. By funding projects like the Innovation Station, the government is reaffirming its commitment to education, equality, and economic development.
Residents eager to get involved with the Innovation Station should keep an eye on Aberdeen City Libraries’ social media channels and website for updates. Whether it’s attending workshops, exploring cutting-edge technology, or becoming an advocate for STEM learning, the project offers opportunities for people of all ages to engage.
The library’s approach ensures that the Innovation Station will be inclusive, accessible, and community-focused. Free resources and support will be available to help individuals and groups make the most of the new technology hub.
The launch of the Innovation Station marks an exciting chapter for Aberdeen City Libraries and the broader community. At a time when technology is reshaping industries and societies, this initiative equips residents with the skills they need to succeed.
By focusing on inclusivity and innovation, the project showcases the vital role libraries play in fostering community growth and resilience. For Aberdeen, the Innovation Station is more than a tech hub, it’s an investment in the city’s future.
