Spectra Festival of Light Returns to Aberdeen in 2025
Aberdeen’s beloved Spectra Festival of Light is back for its 11th edition, promising to dazzle audiences with an enchanting blend of art, creativity, and light. From Thursday 6 February to Sunday 9 February 2025, the city will transform into a vibrant illuminated canvas, drawing visitors from across Scotland and beyond to enjoy this free event.
Spectra has come a long way since its inception over a decade ago. Starting in 2014 with an audience of just 10,000 at a single site, the festival now attracts over 100,000 visits over four days. In 2024, it generated an impressive £2.6 million in visitor spending, cementing its status as a key player in Scotland’s cultural calendar.
Councillor Martin Greig, Aberdeen City Council’s cultural spokesperson, described the festival as a cornerstone of the city’s winter offerings:
“Since its launch, Spectra has offered magical, artistic experiences in the city centre for many to enjoy at no cost... It adds extraordinary sparkle and vitality to brighten up those darker evenings.”
Spectra not only provides unforgettable artistic experiences but also fosters a sense of community and boosts the local economy.
This year’s event promises to deliver the same mix of awe-inspiring light installations and surprises that have made Spectra a favourite. Spread across iconic locations such as Aberdeen Art Gallery, Union Terrace Gardens, and Marischal College, the festival will feature:
Large-scale art installations that combine light, colour, and creativity.
Light projections that bring buildings and public spaces to life.
Interactive elements and surprises for visitors of all ages.
While the full programme will be unveiled in January, Spectra’s history suggests that attendees can expect both local and international artists pushing the boundaries of light-based art.
Spectra is more than just a feast for the senses; it’s a vital part of Aberdeen’s strategy to drive tourism and local engagement during the quieter winter months. The festival is owned and commissioned by Aberdeen City Council and produced by Live Event Management, showcasing the city’s commitment to high-quality, accessible cultural events.
In addition to its artistic appeal, Spectra provides:
Economic Impact: £2.6 million in 2024 alone shows how the festival drives spending at local businesses.
Community Engagement: Spectra’s free events ensure accessibility for all, creating a shared experience that brings residents and visitors together.
A Tourism Draw: As Scotland’s largest urban light festival, it puts Aberdeen firmly on the map for winter tourism.
Spectra isn’t just a festival; it’s an opportunity to explore everything Aberdeen and the North-east of Scotland have to offer in winter. From its rich history and culture to its vibrant food scene and welcoming locals, Aberdeen provides the perfect backdrop for a weekend getaway.
Whether you’re marvelling at the illuminated installations, enjoying the city’s pubs and restaurants, or taking in the winter atmosphere, the festival encourages visitors to see Aberdeen in a new light, literally.
If you’ve never experienced Spectra before, now’s your chance to join the thousands who make it a highlight of their year. Whether you’re a local or planning a trip from further afield, this free festival promises a truly magical experience.
